Welcome to the German Capital of Playing Card

11 July 2010

Altenburg used to be the residence of German Emperors, Princes of Wettin and the Dukes of Gotha. It has seen German history over many centuries and offers the treasures of its splendid past to its guests in a very relaxed, yet animating atmosphere. One might re-live history passing by grand villas, strolling over cobble-stone streets, mounting the castle hill, entering the museums and the theatre or just enjoying the peace in one of the parks.
Altenburg is also Germany’s capital of playing cards, which are produced here since over 500 years. In 1813 Altenburger townsfolk invented the national card game “Skat” and card lovers baptize their cards at the "Skat" fountain" for good luck, always.

The Arcadian Altenburg county, once part of the Dukedom of Saxony-Gotha, is situated in the middle of the "Cultural heart of Germany" with Leipzig, Weimar or Dresden in the distance of an hour’s drive. The region is still a hidden treasure off the beaten path and well worth a visit. Discover surprising attractions both cultural as natural and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Food is always a pleasure in a region dominated by rich farmers and a fertile soil. Come visit and experience our charming Altenburg yourself.
