City of Alenburg

The city of Altenburg

The little city of Altenburg just 30 miles south of Leipzig is known for two things: as the centre of playing card production in Germany and as the birth place of Germany's most popular card game "SKAT". Founded more than a 1000 years ago, Altenburg looks back to a splendid past as the residence of Kings and dukes.
Strolling through narrow cobble-stone streets, along magnificent 19th century buildings, through parks or across the renaissance market place one is immediately taken back to a different world. There is so much to discover and always in easy walking distance:
The imposing castle with the playing card museum, the Lindenau Art Museum with its precious collections of 15th century Italian Altar pieces and modern 20th century paintings, concerts in the theatre or one of the many churches, a tasty bratwurst right from the grill in the market place or a beer with the locals in a pub.
Altenburg is original Germany -past and present- and a special treat for those who prefer to travel off the beaten track and still be right in the middle of germany.
