The Castle of Altenburg

There are not words to describe the beauty and art of the Castle of Altenburg.
Even before the year 800, the great great ancestor of today's Altenburg townspeople created the first settlement here.
Otto I promoted the building of a castle as an outpost of the German occupation and the imperial fortress began in 1132.
Emperor Barbarossa created a monestary here. Later the Wettin dynasty resided here from 1307 until after World War I.

One of the most noted events was the kidnapping of the Princes of Saxony in 1455, when Knight Kunz von Kauffungen kidnapped the Princes Ernest and Albert.

The castle has been rebuilt and extended over the centuries. Currently it is undergoing extensive renovations and refurbishing. In side of the Castle are the museums dedicated to the Castle and the city's history with Playing Cards. There you can find significant collections of armor, watches, porcelain and furniture. An hourly-guided tour shows the banqueting halls and the beautiful gothic church.
