Altenburg countryside

A Day in the Region

If you want to see all the region has to offer, we recommend an early start and a hearty breakfast! If you choose to rent a car it will be quite easy to travel about the region. You can also have the chance to drive on the famous Autobahns. Only a two hour drive from Altenburg is the UNESCO world heritage sight, Eisenach Castle. There are tours of the castle which last about an hour and are even available in English. The most comfortable way is to use the S-Bahn north to Halle and Leipzig or south to Zwickau. Or- rent a bike!

On the return trip from Eisenach, you can stop at some other the major cities along the way. Cities in the area worth seeing are definitly Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena and Gera.

In Erfurt, one can head to the town centre to eat lunch in the St. Petersburg church, a modern architectural building. The restaurant within the church is fully enclosed in glass and located high above the city, allowing you to take in the scenic view.

In Weimar, there is a family-friendly walking tour offered in English that takes about an hour. You’ll have the opportunity to see well-known monuments and houses while learning about the history of the town. Some of the highlights of this excursion includes the former residences of Goethe and Schiller, the two most influential writers in German history. Only 8 kilometres away from Weimar, you’ll find the historical complex of Buchenwald, one of the biggest concentration camps. But beware, this visit is emotionally draining even for the sensible person.

Venture down to Rudolstadt, well-known for its pottery and porcelain manufacturing. Here, amazing pieces of art are formed through a 250 year old tradition. There are a number of places you can visit to further explore the pottery making tradition.

Jena is home to the world’s oldest planetarium. Open year round, it has a large number of different programmes and presentations (including a children’s programme). The Zeiss Planetarium in Jena is a great family-friendly activity.

Once you’ve arrived back in the Altenburg region, we suggest visiting a 'Pick it Yourself' farm, where you can take home some of the great local produce. Depending on the time of year, you could pick up fresh strawberries, asparagus, plums, or other fruits and veggetables.
